Compare Trazodone

... to other antidepressants

Before we compare Trazodone to other antidepressants, lets look a bit at depression itself. Depression can occur if some of the chemicals (also called neurotransmitters) in a person's brain are not functioning effectively. There are three specific chemicals that can affect a person's mood: serotonin (also known as 5-HT), norepinephrine (NE), or dopamine (DA). Trazadone is one of a number of antidepressants that affects one or more of these chemicals in different ways to help steady the chemical imbalance often seen in depression.

The other antidepressants in this class are - Wellbutrin, Zyban, Lithium, Ludiomil, Remeron, Serzone and Effexor. There are other types of antidepressants that work differently, including tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and in these other classes is where you will find the more popular anti-depressants on the market including Zoloft, Paxil and Prozac.

Trazodone compared to Bupropion (Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR), Mirtazapine (Remeron), Nefazodone (Serzone), Venlafaxine (Effexor, Effexor XR), and Maprotiline (Ludiomil)

  1. Lithium, maprotiline (Ludiomil), mirtazapine (Remeron), trazodone (Desyrel), and immediate release bupropion (Wellbutrin) are available in generic formulations. Bupropion sustained release (Wellbutrin SR) and venlafaxine (Effexor, Effexor XR) are not available generically at this time. The patent protecting nefazodone (Serzone) expired in March 2003, but no generic formulations are yet available.
  2. Maprotiline (Ludiomil), mirtazapine (Remeron), venlafaxine extended-release (Effexor XR), and bupropion sustained release (Wellbutrin SR)—doses less than 150 mg/day— can be given once daily. Immediate-release bupropion (Wellbutrin) is usually given three times daily; nefazodone (Serzone) is usually given twice daily; venlafaxine immediate-release (Effexor) is given either twice daily or three times daily; trazodone (Desyrel) is usually given twice daily; and lithium products are usually given twice daily or three times daily.
  3. bupropion (Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR), mirtazapine (Remeron), nefazodone (Serzone), venlafaxine (Effexor, Effexor XR), and maprotiline (Ludiomil) are typically the most used in clinical practice for the treatment of depression. While trazodone is indicated for depression, it is more widely used today for insomnia. Lithium is typically used for manic-depressive symptoms.
